Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, (GADVASU), Ludhiana has added another feather to his hat by securing a patent for buffalo milk protein concentrate technology. The inventors of this technology, from the College of Dairy Science and Technology, Dr Sunil Kumar and Kuldeep Dudi claimed that to date there is no process for concentrating and drying buffalo milk protein capable of maintaining the solubility and other features of the final powder.

Although there was a well-established methodology for the preparation of milk protein concentrate from cow’s milk, no such process was available for buffalo milk. This was because of the differences in the ionic and protein environment of buffalo and bovine milk.

It was a big challenge and the newly developed technology of GADVASU solves the problem appropriately by changing the ionic and protein environment of buffalo milk for the production of highly soluble and functional buffalo milk protein concentrate.

Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice Chancellor, congratulated the inventors of the technology and stressed that the technology developed will open up new avenues for the industry and increase the value-adding opportunities of buffalo milk as the source of choice for the production of quality protein powders.

Hence, it will boost the demand for buffalo milk in the world. He further pointed out that the technology will also contribute to improving the incomes and livelihoods of our farmers.

Dr. JPS Gill, Director of Research, highlighted the importance of the technology developed and said that the protein concentrate comes from buffalo milk, so it would be free from any type of protein allergy as seen in most other protein concentrates available on the market. . He also pointed out that the technology is ready for transfer and easy to replicate at an industrial level.

Dr. Ramneek, dean of the college, while congratulating the scientists, said that the developed buffalo milk based on highly soluble and functional protein concentrate contains both milk proteins i.e. casein and whey protein, therefore considered a potent source of quality protein for consumers.

He revealed that the developed high-protein concentrate can also be used for the development of functional food products, high-protein food products, nutrition bars, sports products, supplements, etc.
